The washing machine vibrates strongly and jumps: we understand the reasons

The vibration of the washing machine is quite common, especially during the spin phase. In the end, her drum spins up to several hundred revolutions. Should I be concerned if the machine vibrates too much – or even moves? Certainly yes. If the machine starts to practically jump, it is worth looking into the internal structure and conducting diagnostics. We will talk about the most common causes of a “jumping” washer.

Where are the vibrations coming from?
Most of the washing machine is occupied by a moving element – the drum. It is he who becomes the main and only source of vibrations. Most often, users notice them in high-speed modes of operation. For example, during spin. Minor vibrations are normal. Do not be afraid if small things “shake” on the top cover.

Engineers have foreseen such a phenomenon. That is why in the design of the washing machine there are special counterweights – on top or around the perimeter of the drum. Paired with several shock absorbers, they almost completely absorb vibrations.

How to determine if the machine vibrates too much? Regulatory requirements for various household appliances are specified in the SanPiN of the Russian Federation , however, there are nuances. Firstly, to measure the vibration level, you will need a specialized tool. Most users simply don’t have it. Secondly, the maximum allowable safe level of vibrations can still cause discomfort and inconvenience.

In any case, the technique should not bounce or budge a few centimeters. Too loud work can become a characteristic symptom of problems. Most manufacturers indicate the maximum permissible noise level during washing and spinning. You can take measurements yourself using a smartphone and the appropriate application .

If the vibrations, in your opinion, are too strong (or even critical) – proceed to the diagnosis.

You can do some of the checks yourself, but if you don’t get along with the technique, it’s better to call specialists right away. In any case, you will need a basic tool – screwdrivers, wrenches, level. First, we advise you to find the instructions for the typewriter. It details how to remove the plastic panels.

Machine installed incorrectly
Counterweights perform their role only if the machine is level. Otherwise, even a few degrees of misalignment will lead to imbalance and vibration. Solving the problem is easy enough. It is necessary to take the level and adjust the legs of the washing machine. At the same time, it is recommended to remove the top cover and set the level on the metal frame: the plastic cover may introduce errors.

What about anti-vibration pads? To begin with, they do not reduce the vibration level of the machine itself. After all, their source is the drum. Such rugs and pads are useful only for slippery flooring, when the equipment moves from its place at an acceptable level of vibration.

Transport fixing bolts not removed
Delivery of a new washing machine is often limited to lifting it to the desired floor. Many buyers connect the equipment themselves. In the joy of a new purchase, they completely forget about elementary things – for example, shipping bolts. These are special fixing elements that connect the drum to the housing for safe transportation.

They must be removed before use. Technically, the machine will work with them, but the vibrations of the drum will not be damped by shock absorbers. Because of this, the technique will begin to vibrate more than usual.

Overloading of linen
The characteristics of the machine always indicate the maximum permissible load level in kilograms. What will happen in case of overload – it is better not to check. In the future, this threatens to break an expensive bearing or destroy the door cuff. In practice, users may experience too much vibration. The drum will be loaded above its norm, and shock absorbers with counterweights will no longer cope.

If vibrations appear, it is worth checking the distribution of the laundry in the drum. Sometimes small clothes like socks and underwear get tangled up in something big. Modern models solve this problem themselves with the help of special sensors, but there are rare exceptions.

Destruction of counterweights
The reason is rare, but this happens on older machines. To check concrete counterweights, it is enough to remove the top or front panel (it all depends on the location of the parts). The blocks are attached with several bolts.

If the counterweight has cracks or is not fixed due to damaged fasteners, a replacement is needed. Even small breaks will lead to imbalance. From constant increasing vibrations, the counterweight will continue to collapse further. It is possible to make repairs without the help of specialists. The main thing is to find an absolutely identical counterweight and assistant – the blocks usually weigh 20-30 kilograms.

Tachogenerator failure
This node transmits engine speed data to the control unit. The latter, in turn, regulates the operation of the washing machine. If the tachogenerator is faulty, then two situations are possible. The drum either does not spin up or runs at extremely high speeds. The latter case can just cause strong vibrations (and even bouncing).

The tachogenerator is mounted directly on the motor drive, so it is not easy to get to it. You can reliably say about the breakdown only with the help of a multimeter. It is necessary to ring the sensor coil. In the resistance measurement mode, the part should show from 50 to 250 ohms, but only a specialist can accurately tell about a
Most shock absorbers fail much earlier than other parts. Some manufacturers claim a service life of 5-7 years. As a rule, two shock absorbers are located at the bottom of the machine – paired with suspension springs, they dampen vibrations from the drum.

O-rings wear out in the shock absorber, and the grease dries out over time. This makes the move of the moving part tighter. As a result, the part will not properly absorb and dampen vibrations.

When buying a new shock absorber, you must first pay attention to the dimensions, as well as stiffness (force). The characteristics must be identical with the parameters of the previous part.

Shock absorbers must be replaced as a set!

You can install new shock absorbers yourself (well, if you have an assistant). The tank can be fixed with transport bolts, turn the machine over and change the elements from the bottom side. However, free access to the installation site is not always available. If you have not disassembled your washing machine before, it is better to contact the master.

After installing new shock absorbers and in the absence of other problems, strong vibrations should disappear.

Bearing wear
If all the above steps did not help, it is worth ordering a diagnosis of one of the key components – the bearing. There are several signs of failure. In addition to an increase in vibrations, this is the appearance of a crunch and a metallic clang, weak spin and damage to the edge of the cuff. How hard is it to get to the bearing? It all depends on each specific washing machine. Often it is necessary to disassemble almost the entire structure.

Strong vibrations and “movement” of the washing machine are associated either with improper installation or with damage to the elements responsible for damping vibrations. Replacing shock absorbers, tachogenerators or bearings is not the most expensive, so do not postpone problems for later.
