The right tail: what cables are suggested for wired mice

They say that there is no limit to perfection. When the personal computer first became a “home” computer, the formidable abbreviation “computer” turned into a warm and lamp-based “PC”. At the same time, the attitude towards electronics has also changed: the computer was “glamorized” and turned into an element of the interior. Now the expectations from the technology of the 21st century can be easily multiplied by two – the computer must be both smart and attractive. And for some time now it has also been “comfortable”, because the task of a computer is to give the maximum in everything. For example, gaming assemblies in eSports are assembled from the latest and most productive components, but this is not the secret of the success of popular teams. Who, if not a person who spends 12 hours in continuous shooter training, knows what sticky buttons on the keyboard are. Or the oak wire of a mouse which will prevent you from dodging enemy projectiles in time and give your team a chance to win the world tournament. Even the most advanced gaming beast will not be ready for serious tests without attention to detail, including the cable of a wired mouse.

The computer mouse was invented in the 70s of the last century. At first, the mouse did not replace other input sources , but was just a luxury accessory. With the advent of personal computers, this manipulator has become the main inhabitant of the desktop. At the same time, the appearance of the device has changed. People worked on the circuitry, reduced the case and moved the wire to the front. In other words, we made the convenience even more convenient. The love of comfort drives the evolution of mice even today – the “polishing” of trifles continues to this day.

For example, ergonomics . The design of the arm is no longer limited by standards: each manufacturer has its own standards and concepts of convenience. Hence, there are so many variations and form factors that appeal to both stylish users and conservative users. Some developers are not afraid to create bold shapes – like vertical manipulators that help to get rid of carpal tunnel syndrome.

This design will relieve fatigue after prolonged use of the manipulator.

The weight of the accessories is included in the same list . The lineup of mice conquers the buyer with its appearance and comfort of grip, and now with a suitable weight category. Here the choice is also individual. Some people like the heavy monolithic construction to better position the cursor in the drawings, while others need a super-light mouse that literally hovers above the surface and gives a head start in a tense shooter match.

The variety does not stop at the external characteristics – it is complemented by the choice of filling. An ordinary user will have enough information about how to connect a mouse to a computer, while gamers will certainly find out what kind of sensor is there , and whether the mouse will break the “roof” at the first sharp turn. The choice of the type of sensor is also important for those who work “on their knees”. A solid mouse can be used in a wide variety of conditions, even on glass or mirrored surfaces.

“Mouse” eye. There are laser and optical.

Another important point is switches . Some users only hear how they click, while others seriously think about the nature of this “click”. So, a self-respecting gaming mouse will deserve the attention of an avid gamer only if it clicks the famous Omron microswitches, which have tens of millions of clicks in durability. In the ruthless gaming sport, no other proposals are quoted. But this may not be the main reason why someone is going to refuse to buy a particular model.

The very thing that clicks.

The positive experience from “balanced” characteristics can spoil the only aspect – the mouse’s tail. And we are not talking about the stability of the device, not about the rate of transmission of electrons through copper conductors, but only about the braiding of the mouse cable. A playful wire can noticeably interfere: wringing or dragging the mouse to the table, which is annoying to say the least.

Mouse wires
The mouse wire affects the comfort of using the computer. For example, the composition of the material and the type of coating affect the usability of the manipulator for specific tasks. A new comfortable minimum for a mouse is the correct weight distribution and an “invisible” wire that is not felt during operation and does not remind of itself. Weight distribution – so that the wire does not outweigh the mouse.

Balance in everything, even in grams.

The general characteristics of the wires are, firstly, influenced by the conductors inside the braid. Let there be copper and soft cores – then the wire will become resistant to multiple kinks, and it will not be silly to spring instead of memorizing the shape. Secondly, the gaming mouse wire is exposed to hot conditions during matches and, consequently, increased wear and tear. Therefore, a nylon thread is often used at the base of the mouse “tail” – this way is stronger and more reliable. Thirdly, there are as many types of “tails” as there are models of manipulators. Each will have both advantages and disadvantages – there is no friend for taste and color.

Polymer “tail”
Computer mice are made of plastic, although it would be more correct to say polymer, because every part of the body or filling of the device consists of formulas with the prefix “poly”. For example, the body of a mouse is formed from a rigid polymer, the wheel is made of rubberized. And the teflon “paws” of the mouse are poured from polytetrafluoroethylene – a special composition, which is also included in the plastic group.

Sheaths for computer wires are made of similar materials. True, the price category and model range strongly affect the quality and performance.

In the design of budget mice, soft polymers are rarely used, including rubberized scroll wheels and soft wires. For example, the cable sheath for the simplified models is made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), the softness and flexibility of which depends on the thickness of the material and the temperature. This wire is coarse, unwieldy and heavy.

This is Defender MS-759 – a mouse for “three hundred”.

Similar materials can be found in models of the lower and middle price segments. But this does not stop some budget mice from becoming bestsellers.

In some models, the quality of the cable is different from the polymer one. The manufacturer adds rubber to the composition – this makes the wire elastic, resilient and resistant to kinks. The shell is tactilely similar to rubber.

The evolution of “tails” continues and takes the blows of modern modding. The fashion for ordering the insides of a computer began with the advent of certain materials, and this round of tuning is being promoted to this day. To diversify the boring look of the power wires in the case, you can put them in a braid. The pioneers who discovered the “beautiful” started with a difficult one: they had to remove the pads, unsolder the terminals and pull the wires into ordinary textile cords.

Now for modding cables, they offer special kits of braids.

Modding is much easier today. Manufacturers noticed a promising trend and did the same in the factory. And then they began to use it in external accessories – headphone wires, USB cables and mouse tails.

Now such a “wrapper” awaits the owner of the middle and expensive segment already from the factory. Under it is the most common rubber cable, and therefore the behavior and benefits are similar.

excellent appearance;
increased strength;
quickly takes the desired shape and remains in this form – the memory effect works to the fullest;
slightly stiffer than simple wires – this is offset by good sliding properties on any surface.

Parachute CORD – nylon ropes used by the paratroopers. They are used to make slings and weave other elements that work under high load. There are only seven types of strength, the strongest cord can withstand up to 500 kg of weight.

Cords are different – for computer accessories only an outer sheath of the “cord” type is used.

The mouse cable consists of four strand wires, sometimes nylon thread between them for strength and shielding, as well as an outer polymer or rubber sheath. In other words, an ordinary wire with protection against external interference.

Mouse cable, it is also a regular wire.

Without plastic or rubber braiding, thin wires can get damaged, so tear protection has to look for materials with a balance of flexibility and strength. Cheap PVC derivatives cannot offer this. To compensate for the unattractive appearance and nuances in the behavior of the bare braid, manufacturers use fabric braiding. But this is also not an option. It’s a different matter to combine the flexibility of bare conductors and the beauty of the braid.

In this form, the wire from the mouse cannot be left – it is ugly, and it will quickly deteriorate.

Nylon’s sufficient strength and wear resistance allows the cord to be used as a single braid for the four inner cores without the use of a plastic sheath. First, “innovation” went through the hands of home modders, and now manufacturers have mastered this technology.

These wires are found in the Glorious and Xtrfy gaming models. Paracords are also sold separately – as a replacement cable for any modern mouse.

Paracord mice are so different from analogs with a plastic wire that they are compared in terms of convenience with wireless ones. And this is not surprising – the annoying and clumsy mouse wire no longer interferes with games and work. It folds easily, does not straighten arbitrarily, but also does not have a permanent memory effect. For clarity, you can imagine the behavior of a regular lace on the table – the same will be done by a mouse parkord.

Of the listed features of gaming mice, comfort remains the most important. Although many pay attention to the characteristics, it should be understood that comfort should be put first, and then technical data. Because you will have to hold the mouse for several hours a day, and the hand will not say thanks for an uncomfortable shape or a too heavy body by the end of the working day. Moreover, if this is a wired device with an uncomfortable and annoying hose instead of a nice “cord”.

And yet, wired technologies are being replaced by wireless ones. There’s no plastic, no paracode, no annoying wiring restrictions – but that’s another story altogether.
