The main reasons why we overpay for electricity

In the list of bills for the apartment or the largest, usually for electricity. Many do not know where the presented figures come from and why, in the end, such a high power consumption. You can save on electricity, but only if you identify the reason for the overpayment. Our material will help to do this.

Cooling technology in summer
In the hot season, electricity consumption increases, because many are actively using cooling climate technology. However, we will start with something else.

A refrigerator is a household appliance that works all year round the clock. Old models like “Turquoise” and similar ones have extremely low energy efficiency – they can consume up to 3.5 kW per day. Is it a lot or a little? For comparison: modern models of refrigerators have electricity consumption at the level of up to 500 W per day. Savings more than six times.

If you have an old refrigerator, it might be time to consider buying a new one. In order not to overpay for electricity, choose models with an energy efficiency class of at least “A”, and it is best to find a model of the “A ++” or “A +++” level

If the volume of the refrigerator is not enough for you, you can buy a freezer. Why it is convenient and practical is explained in this article .

Air conditioning is another device that many people use 24/7 in the summer. Even a relatively weak 2 kW model consumes about 700-800 watts per hour on average. With 24/7 operation, this is a huge power consumption. Is there anything you can do in this situation?

First, make sure the air conditioner is sized for the intended area . If its capacity is not enough, then even with round-the-clock work, it will not be able to cool the room to the desired temperature. Secondly, carefully isolate the rooms – do not open windows or doors when the air conditioner is operating, so that heat does not enter the room. Do not forget about curtains and blinds if the windows are on the sunny side. All this will allow you to use the air conditioner less often, and not drive it around the clock.

If you have an older model, you can buy a new one, but of a higher energy efficiency class. As with refrigerators, the savings can be multiple.

Fan – fairly effective alternative to an air conditioner. It can be used in tandem with a split system, dispersing cold air to other rooms, or on its own. Earlier, we have already described how you can establish a comfortable microclimate in summer with the help of one or several fans. The fan’s energy consumption is negligible when compared to even the most energy efficient air conditioner.

Do not forget that the floor fan also needs to be looked after – show you how and why .

Dehumidifier . In hot weather, many turn on a dehumidifier around the clock. Although it does not lower the temperature, it subjectively makes the air cooler by removing moisture. Its consumption is relatively small – 220-320 W per hour, but with round-the-clock use it is quite a significant waste.

To turn on the dehumidifier less often, you need to check all sources of moisture in the house: shower, bath, aquarium, piping. There may be a leak somewhere that leads to increased humidity. Often the cause of increased humidity is a violation of ventilation in the room.

You can remove dampness by frequent airing the room, as well as turning on a household heater. Still, the most optimal way to deal with high humidity is with dehumidifiers. What to choose from a huge assortment, we told here .

Energy-intensive appliances in the bathroom and in the kitchen
The boiler is another significant energy consumer. For example, a 100 liter water heater for a family of four will consume about 200 kW per month, and this is a significant blow to your budget. There are several ways to save on the boiler:

Change the flow-through model to a storage boiler. The latter are considered more energy efficient, so electricity costs per month can be reduced by 2-4 times, depending on the model. Each type of water heater has its own advantages and disadvantages. What is better – we will tell you in detail.

Use models with a thermostat and / or storage tanks with two heating elements. Users can choose to heat the water not up to 80 degrees, but up to 40-60, if this is enough for a bath or washing dishes. This will reduce energy consumption.
Use software-enabled models. For example, set to turn on for heating at night, if during this period the price of electricity is lower, and then use only the function of maintaining the temperature.
Timely service the heating element. Just one millimeter of a layer of scale can reduce the efficiency of the heating element by 75%.

Washer. We usually use the typewriter 2-3 times a week, but if you have a large family, the equipment can work several times a day. Depending on the energy efficiency class, the washing machine consumes from 0.65 kW to 5 kW per hour with a full tank load. If you are just going to buy equipment, then be sure to pay attention to the energy efficiency class. Models with an index below “A” are already considered obsolete. The information is usually indicated on the appropriate label:

Also, if possible, wash at lower temperatures and run the machine with the tank as full as possible.

Dishwasher. On average, this technique consumes about 0.8-1.05 kW per hour for class “A”. In a large family, the dishwasher can be started 4-6 times a day, which will contribute to the total electricity consumption. If you want to keep costs down, you will need to use the dishwasher less often. However, there are several alternatives:

Buy models with a heat exchanger – it will save heat, which will later be used to heat water.
Choose models with a “half load” function that operate with less energy in this mode.
Make sure to service the dishwasher , otherwise the efficiency will decrease.
Multimedia devices
In addition to the above equipment, a computer, a router, one or more TVs, and a set-top box are often used in the house. You can calculate the power consumption by the power of the power supplies for each device.

The largest consumer is usually the computer. Office PCs consume on average up to 400 W / h at maximum, gaming assemblies – up to 800 W / h. TVs with LCD screens 40-50 inches can consume 150-250 W / hr. The consumption of a router, speakers and other small peripherals can be estimated at 5–40 W / h. Despite such modest figures, the total energy consumption for a month, especially for a year, is impressive.

There are several ways to save energy:

Use sleep mode whenever possible. Computers, laptops, and turntables can go into a low-power standby mode.
Disconnect unused equipment. Connect devices via surge protectors with a button. So you can completely de-energize the equipment at night.
Disable wireless interfaces (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth) when not in use.
On TVs and monitors, you can turn on the “eco-mode”, which will also slightly reduce consumption;
If necessary, use smart plugs to disconnect selected appliances from the power supply.

If you have weak heating at home, or it is completely absent, then you will definitely resort to using heaters. With active use, these devices also significantly increase your electricity bills.

The most voracious fan heaters with a capacity of up to 2.5 kW – they can consume up to 15 kW of energy per day with an eight-hour operation. If you have several fan heaters, then the value obtained can be multiplied by the number of devices.

Oil heaters with a power of 1-2 kW are only slightly more economical – about 13 kW per day for heating a small room of 20 m 2 . They heat the room at a slower rate, but the oil retains heat for a long time.

The most economical are infrared heaters . Different subspecies (quartz, carbon, ceramic) consume approximately the same amount of energy – on average 1-1.5 kW per hour and up to 10 kW per day in an eight-hour mode. Convector heaters have approximately the same consumption.

To understand which of all this is best, we recommend that you study it in detail in a separate material .

If you do not want to overpay for heaters, then you should think about thermal insulation of the room: installation of high-quality double-glazed windows, elimination of cracks in doorways, thermal insulation of the floor and walls. All this is a long-term investment that will help you save on heating your rooms.

An electric kettle is another indispensable device in cold winters. Suppose you boil water six times a day, then the consumption per day will be about 1 kW. The figure is insignificant, but if you increase the number of boils, and even on a powerful electric kettle, then the electricity consumption will be more impressive. We recommend that you do not disdain the function of maintaining the temperature, and also try to boil only the necessary amount of water so that the device does not work in excess of the norm.
