Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has issued orders to put out more than 50 fires.
According to the international website, experts are being called in to help put out the fire in the pit known as the “Gate of Hell” following an order from the Turkmen president.
The pit in the Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan was formed in 1971 due to an accident while exploring for gas reserves, and the fire that started in the pit has not been extinguished to this day.
The pit, built during the Soviet era, is 20 meters deep and 70 meters wide. The “Gate of Hell” has now become an attraction for scientists and tourists.
According to Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, the pit is having a negative impact on the environment and the health of the people living around it, and is damaging natural resources.
It is to be noted that attempts have been made to extinguish the fire even before this, but none of them was successful.
