Missouri, USA: Aging brings many problems and animals are not safe from it. An elderly penguin at a zoo in Missouri has been given specially designed shoes to soothe the legs of an arthritis sufferer.
Sassisia belongs to the Southern Rock Hoppersons and has lived longer than his natural age because he is now over 30 years old, although he lives only ten years in the natural environment. It was brought to St. Louis Zoo in 2016. Then, a few years ago, he gradually developed arthritis in his legs, which was getting worse every year.
Yen, a penguin pathologist, noticed that the skin on the soles of his feet was getting thicker and bigger, which is a major sign of the disease. Many ointments and medicines were applied on it but to no avail. The zoo’s doctor, Jimmy Johnson, then suggested that he wear special shoes because he had previously worn shoes for a sick swan.
Dr. Jimmy asked Thera Pa, a New Jersey company, to make shoes for the Penguin, and in October 2020, his shoes were ready. These are strap shoes with a red and black grip-like material underneath. During the day these penguins are put on and at night they are taken off.
The doctors noticed that Enrick’s speed increased and so did his medication.
