Nintendo Gaming Platform: Switch Consoles, Switch Online Subscription and Exclusives

Nintendo and its gaming ecosystem stand apart from Sony and Microsoft. The Japanese company focuses on “single” projects, is reluctant to launch games-services on its platforms, and is constantly experimenting with consoles. Today we’ll talk about Nintendo consoles, Switch Online subscriptions, and current and upcoming exclusives.

Consoles
Nintendo cut production of the 3DS handheld console last September. We will leave it outside the parentheses of the material, because the Japanese do not release new games on the 3DS. Let’s concentrate on Switch and its library.

Switch hit the shelves in March 2017. It combines the features of a stationary and portable device. It can be connected to a docking station and a TV, or you can take it with you on the bus, subway or for a walk in the park.

The console is powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra X1 SoC. The diagonal of the touch screen is 6.2 inches, the resolution is 1280×720. At the same time, in stationary mode, the Switch is capable of displaying a picture in 1080p at a speed of 60 frames / s. In portable mode, the SoC frequency is limited so that the battery lasts at least 2-3 hours. The micro-SD card slot is tucked away behind a hinged leg. The card will probably come in handy, since the internal memory is only 32 GB. There are also USB-C and 3.5mm audio jacks. Active cooling implemented.

The right joycon contains the NFC module, the left – the button for taking screenshots and recording video. Both are equipped with an accelerometer and gyroscope to make aiming easier in shooters and offer motion control as an alternative to the standard push button. In TV mode, joycons can be inserted into a special holder – you get a familiar gamepad. Each joycon can act as a separate controller. This is handy when you want to try out co-op or local competitive multiplayer with a friend. There is no need to spend money on a second gamepad.

The Switch may have modest performance, but it really enhances the gaming experience. Joycon features are used, for example, in Super Mario Odyssey, Just Dance, Splatoon 2.

Switch games come in ROM cartridges. There is also an online store with digital versions, eShop. There is no regional blocking, which many people use when buying products in those foreign stores where prices are lower.

In 2019, Nintendo updated the Switch with the Tegra X1 + chip. Unlike the Tegra X1, it is manufactured using a more modern process technology. As a result, the battery allows you to have fun for 4.5 hours or more.

The same Tegra X1 + received Switch Lite, strictly “pocket” modification of the Switch. Joycons are here “soldered” into the “body” of the console, the display size is 5.5 inches, the D-pad is made in the form of a familiar cross, and is not divided into separate buttons.

The audience loved Nintendo’s experiments. As of March 2021, two revisions of the “older” Switch and the “younger” Lite have sold 84 million units.

Accessories
Nobody forces you to wave wonderful joycons, especially in certain genres, especially in fighting games, a more serious gamepad is required. For example, Wireless Switch Pro Controller.

Switch Pro Controller looks quite traditional. It communicates with the console via Bluetooth, and charges via the USB-C wire. If you want the signal to go through the cable, activate the “Wired connection” in the settings. A full charge takes 6 hours, while a gamepad is enough for 35-40 hours. There is a gyroscope, accelerometer, NFC tag, and the D-pad, like the Switch lite, is made in the form of a cross.

Gamepad Nintendo Pro grayFor those who don’t want to pay extra for the Switch Pro Controller, Nintendo offers a rechargeable joycon holder. It has a USB-C port, unlike the holder that the Japanese put in the Switch box.

Found the GameCube era and got used to its controller? Well, you are free to use such a controller with the Switch, you just have to buy a special adapter.

Nintendo also sells a protective film for the screen, additional straps for joycones, covers, a docking station (in a set with a power supply and HDMI), a Joy-Con Wheel (a joycon is attached to it) … There are a lot of accessories, let’s dwell in more detail on unusual amiibo and Nintendo Labo.

Joy-Con Wheel

Figures and amiibo cards have walked the planet victoriously since 2014. An NFC chip is embedded in the amiibo – to transfer or record data, it is enough to bring it to the gamepad / console. These figures and cards add characters, costumes, “skins”, quests, and equipment to games. One amiibo is often allowed to be used in multiple virtual worlds.As for Labo, this is an interactive constructor. The set includes a cartridge with software and cardboard. You make various devices out of cardboard, like a toy car and a piano. Joycones bring them to life, namely their gyroscopes, vibration function and an IR camera built into the right joycon. The Labo constructor is aimed at children 6-10 years old.

Subscription
In September 2018, Nintendo made online in-game modes (with the exception of free-to-play like Fortnite) paid. To access them, you must purchase a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

cloud saves (useful if you continue the passage from another console);
voice chat (via an application on a smartphone);
dozens of free hits from the NES and SNES (Ninja Gaiden, Kirby’s Adventure, Punch-Out !!, Double Dragon 2, etc.);
special content in games (such as bonus items) and promotional offers.
Nintendo Switch Online costs a lot less than Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus. This is explained by the fact that Nintendo does not give away AAA projects as a gift.

Games
A lot of decent games have landed on the Switch. The addictive open-world RPG The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild , Super Mario Odyssey’s inventive platformer at every level , Super Smash Bros. Ultimate , Pokémon Sword / Shield collecting cravings , harsh action / RPG Monster Hunter Rise , great for get-togethers with friends Super Mario Party, bouncy race Mario Kart 8 Deluxe , cute and carefree Animal Crossing: New Horizons …
