But how effective is it and can it become a full-fledged replacement for ordinary mopping? Let’s conduct a test and understand in detail using the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo 900 as an example.

How does wet cleaning work in robotic vacuum cleaners
In the simplest case, the whole process of wet cleaning with a robot vacuum cleaner is an ordinary wiping of the floor with a damp cloth. In this case, the napkin is constantly wetted with water coming from a special tank.
Typically, cleaning cloths are made from microfiber. This material is very durable, highly absorbent, easy to wash and dries quickly.
In the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo 900 robot vacuum cleaner, the napkin is fixed on the plate with a Velcro textile fastener.
Water from the tank is supplied by a pump. Thanks to this, you can adjust the intensity of wetting the napkin.
The mechanism for supplying water with a pump is better than simple water supply by gravity. At the end of cleaning, after the vacuum cleaner automatically starts charging, water will not spontaneously flow out of the tank, even if you forget to drain it.
It is best to pour only filtered water into the tank. So there is less chance that deposits will clog the system over time.
The tank is fixed on the body of the robot vacuum cleaner with a latch, and the water supply connection is made in the form of a fitting.
Water evenly flows onto the napkin from three holes located on the body.
But it should be borne in mind that water at the beginning of the cleaning cycle cannot immediately wet the entire fabric. The robot will travel several square meters with a dry cloth before the full cleaning of the floor begins.
Preparing for testing
In order to determine if there is any real benefit from a robot vacuum cleaner with a wet cleaning function, a practical test was carried out.
Previously, the floor was divided with masking tape into two equal sections. Approximately two meters long, one meter wide. Floor covering – PVC tiles.
The left side was given to the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo 900 robot vacuum cleaner for wet cleaning. The water supply mode was set to the maximum level.
The second part of the floor was washed with an ordinary mop.
For three days, the room was not specially cleaned, and the robot vacuum cleaner was not started in it. For the test, dust and hair from the vacuum cleaner container were evenly applied to the floor. Additionally, wet footprints from dirty shoes were left.

Wet cleaning robot vacuum cleaner
For the reliability of testing, not a new napkin was used, but one that had been in operation for eight months.
The water coming out of the container of the robot cleaner in a short cleaning cycle cannot wet the entire cloth. Therefore, it was pre-wetted and well wrung out.
By the time the vacuum cleaner took about two minutes.
The floor after cleaning was visually clean, slightly damp.
The napkin became very dirty, but there was practically no dust in the container.
Cleaning with a mop
The right side was washed with a mop, not very thoroughly, without strong pressure. Additional detergents were not used.
Even though the cloth was well wrung out, there was much more water left on the floor compared to wet cleaning by the robot.
A lot of dust has accumulated on the rag, but because of its color it is not very visible.
Comparison of results
After the floor was dry, the cleanliness was checked using disposable viscose napkins.

The check was done manually. The wipes were well soaked in clean water, and then the appropriate parts of the floor were washed again with them.
The napkin of the left half of the floor, where the robot vacuum cleaner cleaned, looked noticeably dirtier.
There is no doubt that cleaning with a mop was more effective.
Additionally, both wipes were thoroughly rinsed in the same volume of water.
The water from the area of the floor where the mop was carried out is cleaner, but there is a small amount of hair in it. A rag and a mop could not completely remove them. The robot vacuum cleaner , in turn, simply wrapped them around the brushes.
The robot vacuum cleaner did worse with the test. This is not surprising, because the area of the napkin for cleaning the robot is smaller. In addition, the napkin when moving the vacuum cleaner is not pressed against the floor as much as a rag when washing by hand or with a mop.
But in order to thoroughly wash the floor in the entire apartment on your own, it is advisable to pre-vacuum it, since it can be difficult to remove large debris with a rag. It takes both energy and time. And the robot vacuum cleaner does not get tired and can do two things at once.
Wet cleaning with a robot vacuum cleaner can be easily performed daily and even several times a day. This is very convenient if you have pets or small children at home. In addition, when the robot cleaner performs daily wet cleaning, the accumulation of a large amount of dirt and dust is unlikely. Accordingly, the result of cleaning in practice will be much better than in the experiment. And the repetition of wet cleaning day after day will make the floor cleaner and cleaner every time.
All you need to do is install a napkin, pour water into the tank, and at the end of the cleaning cycle, shake out the debris, rinse the napkin and drain the remaining water from the tank. Fast and convenient.
The wet cleaning mode on robotic vacuum cleaners with electronic water supply can be safely started even while you are away from home.
Important! After cleaning, the vacuum cleaner automatically starts charging. In robots with pumps, the water supply is then stopped. But the napkin is still wet. If you do not have the opportunity to immediately remove it, then over time the water can ruin the flooring. For example, laminate edges may swell and hardwood flooring may warp.
To prevent this from happening, some models of robotic vacuum cleaners with a wet function are equipped with special stands.
They are made from moisture resistant materials. But if there is no such accessory for your vacuum cleaner, then you can make it yourself, for example, by carefully cutting it out of a silicone film (glass film).
So, a wet wipe is guaranteed not to harm the floor covering.

According to the results of testing and based on practice, wet cleaning is by no means a useless thing. Dried dirt cannot be defeated by a robot vacuum cleaner without wet cleaning.
