How to install roller blinds on PVC windows

Installation of roller blinds does not require special skills and a complex tool, so their fastening can be done on your own. On average, installing blinds on a standard window takes up to one and a half hours. If a power tool is not available, you can get by with an ordinary screwdriver. However, in this case, the installation of the loan takes longer – about 2–2.5 hours.

Pros of roller blinds
Roller blinds and lamellas are equally easy to attach. For installation, you only need a screwdriver and the simplest measuring tool. However, unlike blinds made of metal or plastic slats, roller blinds are easier to care for. Due to the anti-static effect, dust does not accumulate so quickly on the fabric. And it is easier to remove dirt from a solid web much easier than from a large number of narrow lamellas. Also, the advantages of roller blinds include:

rich selection of decors;
different light transmittance (depending on the density of the fabric):
compatibility with roof windows and any other horizontal or vertical windows;
the ability to connect to a remote control system;
maintainability – replacing fabric is easier than damaged lamellas;
the presence of blackout canvases, capable of completely darkening the premises.In addition, fabric models are less interesting for pets than slat blinds. Cats gnaw and bend metal and plastic slats, rattle them during games (most often they do this in the bedroom at night).

Types of roller blinds
There are several types of blinds. At the same time, the basic principle of operation is the same for all types – the web is wound on a special drum and unwound freely. This opens and closes the skylight. The difference between the modifications of roller blinds is in small differences:

attachment point – inside or outside the window opening, on active sashes or frame;
the presence of guide rails – they are fixed at the edges of the fabric cloth so that they hold the curtain in a given position;
complete with an electric drive – the device allows you to remotely control the blinds;
the presence of a decorative casing – with the help of this element, the drum with the web is closed.

The choice of model depends on the operating conditions and requirements for roller blinds. The simplest option is popular – a drum with a canvas and a set of fasteners. If necessary, it is supplemented with side rails and a decorative cover.

Choosing a place for mounting roller blinds
Ideally, blinds should not interfere with the opening of active window sashes. If you need not only darkening the room, but also protection against overheating, they must be placed as close as possible to the double-glazed windows. When fixing the blinds outside the window opening in direct sunlight, the slopes and the window sill will heat up. This will cause the room temperature to rise.

If the blinds are fixed on the active sashes, it is necessary to check whether the fasteners will not rest against the slopes when opening the window. This problem is relevant in most cases – when the active sash is fully swung open, the louver fasteners damage the slope lining.

Contact is excluded only in cases where the distance between the slope and the sash is about 40 mm. But such situations are rare. Usually the sash is 20–25 mm away from the vertical slope. This is not enough to fully open the window, so in such cases it is necessary:

install a safety stop that will stop the active sash and prevent the fastener from damaging the slope;
fix the blinds at the top of the slope.
If the second option is chosen, then there must be a distance of at least 40–45 mm between the horizontal plane of the slope and the upper edge of the active leaf. Otherwise, when the window is opened, the sash will cling to the roll of fabric.

Roller blinds size
It is important to determine precisely the width of the canvas, since the length of the fabric in rolls is taken with a margin and averages 1700 mm. It is quite enough for any windows installed in typical openings of apartment buildings. Measurement is required only when the height of the glass unit exceeds the specified value.

The width and height of the skylight for active and fixed leaves must be measured so that the blinds completely overlap the glazing beads. However, it should not go over the handle. If you measure the width strictly on the glass unit, the sun will shine through the blinds. Therefore, it is better to make a small margin so that the edges of the canvas go over the glazing beads.

Roller blinds are sold ready-made or made to order. The scale of standard sizes allows you to choose blinds for almost any window in an apartment, house, or office. If the width is a little more or less, you do not have to order the production of custom-made blinds. The permissible error is +/- 10 mm.

What is included in the roller blinds set
The complete set of this type of curtains depends on their manufacturer and may differ slightly. However, the basic kit allows for installation without purchasing additional elements. It includes:The set can be supplemented with side guides that hold the curtain in a plane parallel to the glass unit. Recently, the design has been simplified – a tension cord is used instead of guides. One of the listed configuration options is most often required when installing blinds on an inclined plane. When installing on vertically installed windows, these elements can be dispensed with.

How best to fix roller blinds
The set of fasteners includes brackets with double-sided tape and brackets for fixing with self-tapping screws. The first fixing option is intended for those who do not want to drill holes for self-tapping screws in window profiles. It is ideal for temporary installation of blinds. Most often, such situations are encountered when renting housing or in those cases when it is a pity to drill holes in new expensive windows.

If you plan to install roller blinds permanently, the appearance of the profiles under the fasteners does not matter. Small diameter holes on frames and active sashes do not affect the performance of the windows. Moreover, when using fasteners with double-sided tape, one problem arises – they often come off.

There is another way of fixing roller blinds – with the help of brackets, which must be put on top of the active sash. This method is the simplest and fastest, but it is best not to use it. Brackets put on top of the profile can negatively affect the tightness of the window. In addition, they are only compatible with active leaves. If the window also has blind sashes, you will still have to choose an alternative way of attaching the brackets to the profile – using tape or self-tapping screws.

What tool is needed
Roller blinds can be fixed manually and semi-mechanically. The second option is more convenient, since screwing self-tapping screws into high-quality window plastic with a screwdriver is a dubious pleasure. To perform work in a semi-mechanical way, you will need:

If the installation is planned in the opening or outside on the walls, you will need a hammer drill or hammer drill and a drill for concrete. Exception – walls and slopes are sheathed with plasterboard. In such cases, a set of tools is sufficient, which is necessary for installation on window frames and sashes and supplemented with a drill Ø 8 mm.

Blinds installation process
An important stage of installation is marking the profile for self-tapping screws for fixing the brackets. Even a slight inaccuracy and an offset of only 2–3 mm can cause the blind lifting mechanism to malfunction. To correct the error, it is often necessary to drill new holes in the profile. Indeed, due to a slight displacement of the fasteners, the distance between them may turn out to be too large or small for normal fixation of the drum with the fabric.

The marking can be done by calculation and by attaching the assembled roller blind to the window profile. If there is an assistant, then it is better to choose the second method – it is easier and more accurate. When installing alone, it is more rational to resort to using a combined technique, which consists of simple calculations and attaching brackets to the profile:

Subtract the length of the assembled roller blinds from the width of the active sash (this information is on the packaging, but it is better to measure the structure yourself), and then divide the difference by 2. The resulting value is the distance from the vertical edges of the sash to the fasteners.
Using a tape measure, mark the distance obtained on the upper profile of the active sash and draw vertical lines through the points. This needs to be done to the right and left of the skylight.Attach the right and left brackets to the sash in turn so that their outer edges coincide with the drawn lines. The distance from the top edge of the sash to the brackets should be about 15 mm. Then mark through the holes for the self-tapping screws the points of attachment of the brackets to the profile.After marking, you can immediately proceed to the procedure for fixing roller blinds:

Make small indentations with a core or awl at the marked points and drill holes with a diameter of 2.5 mm in the profile.
Fasten the brackets with self-tapping screws with a semicircular head 3.5×16 mm (a curtain can cling to the cone-shaped head).
