How to install PVC tiles with glue

Vinyl tiles have no locking elements at the edges and are attached to the base with glue. The technology for laying such modular floors is very similar to working with linoleum, but there is a lot in common with the installation of laminate flooring.

How to prepare a room
The room must be glazed and heated. You can start arranging the floor after completing all finishing work and thorough cleaning.

The permissible relative humidity is 65%, but manufacturers consider 40 to 60 percent ideal. The air temperature should be at least 15 ° C, and the optimal indicators should be about 18-20 ° C. It is recommended to completely eliminate any drafts.

In sunny weather, it makes sense to shade the windows, since direct sunlight can cause local overheating and, as a result, the glue will dry out and the floor covering will come off.

How to prepare the base
It is possible to lay PVC tiles on any solid base that does not crack or deform during operation. The best option is flat monolithic screeds.

Please note that some manufacturers prohibit gluing PVC tiles on prefabricated substrates of various building boards (dry screed). They believe that the strength of such a foundation is insufficient according to the requirements of SNiP 2.03.13.

It is also quite often forbidden to lay PVC on old linoleum and ceramic tiles. On the surface where the PVC tiles are supposed to be laid, there should not be even small irregularities, otherwise they will be “printed” on the surface of the floor covering. Also, general differences in the plane of more than 2 mm per 2 running meters are not allowed.

The base of the floor, poured using gypsum, cement or polymer binder, is leveled with a leveling compound. The thickness of the alignment should be more than 2 millimeters, this is necessary for the formation of a durable non-absorbent layer.

Before installation, check the residual moisture content of the monolithic screed and the repair leveling layer. For cement screeds and cement-polymer leveling agents, the moisture content can be no more than 2%.

What tools are needed
1. Rule plastering and measuring wedge – in order to examine the base for irregularities.

2. Construction mixer , needle roller , beacons, container, wide notched trowel – for leveling the base with a leveling compound.

Drill mixer Caliber ERM-1600 / 2E 4 899 *
3. A chipping line, tape measure , pencil , laser builder – for marking the location of tiles on the floor.

Measuring ruler Russia 500 mm 30562 150 *
4. Joiner’s square, hook-shaped knife or a knife with a trapezoidal blade , a ruler – for marking and cutting tiles.

Model knife DEKO BS16 260 *
5. Metal notched trowel – for applying glue.

Notched trowel Acor Optimum 200 mm 49 *
6. Cork board and heavy (about 50-70 kilograms) stitching roller – to remove air bubbles.

Laying PVC tiles on underfloor heating is only allowed if their operating temperature is limited to 27 ° C.

Tile preparation
In the cold season, PVC tiles must be acclimatized. When the air temperature outside is below zero – at least two days, at temperatures from 0 to 15 degrees – at least a day. For acclimatization, modular PVC material is recommended to be unpacked and spread out in a heated room in “fans”.

Before starting work, we recommend that you carefully examine all the tiles in order to identify lamellas with possible defects. The tile should be “shuffled” for a more correct color distribution over the area of the room. So there will be no areas with a monotonous pattern.

Basically, either a parallel method of laying vinyl tiles is chosen (along the walls, the seams go in the direction of the light), or diagonal. But it is also possible to mount such as “herringbone”, “braid”, etc.

The main thing is that the transverse joints of the tiles in adjacent rows are displaced, as they say, “with a ligation”.

If the tile is square, then the seams are not tied. They start from the center of the room, the drawing of different modules is unfolded according to a given (for example, “checkerboard”) scheme.

The pattern on modular PVC floors can be directional. The corresponding arrow mark can be found on the back of the lamellas.

When proceeding to the direct marking, the trim size must be taken into account. The ideal option is when the tiles near the walls and in doorways remain almost intact. To do this, the easiest way is to completely unfold the modules in the room without glue and, if necessary, correct the layout.

Before gluing the tiles, a starting line is applied to the base. First, it is made with a coated chop cord, and then it is directed with a pencil.

For the installation of lockless PVC tiles, water-based glue is used. In fact, a similar glue is used when laying linoleum. Modular flooring manufacturers usually provide a list of suitable adhesives and brands.

The glue is applied to the base surface with a notched trowel. The size and texture of the teeth of a suitable comb is regulated by the adhesive manufacturer. The most commonly used spatula is A2.

It is very important to take a pause after applying the glue so that it airs a little and gains maximum adhesive power. The duration of such a pause is usually indicated in the instructions. But the glue mixture also has a “open life”, after which it can no longer be used. If the master did not have time to glue the tiles, the glue must be removed.

Depending on the exposure time and on the lifetime of the glue in the open state, choose a segment of the floor, which is coated before gluing. Most often, craftsmen apply glue to lay two rows of tiles.

The adhesive is applied evenly without creating double layers.

The modules are placed in the designed position and pressed using smoothing movements. In this case, the planks are tightly fitted at the joints. If adhesive has come out, remove it immediately.

After gluing all the tiles to the coated segment, the surface is rolled with rollers weighing from 50 to 75 kilograms in order to completely squeeze the air out from under the PVC material. It is recommended to repeat the rolling with rollers on the same segment after about 20 minutes, and the edges of the tiles must be pressed down especially carefully.

To check the quality of application and curing of the adhesive mixture, some tiles need to be blown up before rolling. So any gaps are visible.

The gluing process is repeated for each new segment, with the installer moving away from himself, moving to the already glued area.

The final stage
At the end of the installation, the tiles are cut along the edges of the room. To do this, the module is cut along the front surface, then it breaks and is cut through. The trim is measured in such a way that between the flooring and the walls (or any stationary interior elements) there is about 5-10 mm in the form of a technological gap.

Tiles at the edges (especially in doorways) are sometimes fixed in place with masking tape in order to prevent it from moving. You can use modular vinyl floors after the adhesive is completely dry. These terms are indicated by manufacturers of water-dispersed adhesive mixtures.
