How to install fans on anti-vibration mounts and why to do it

Vibration and hum are some of the most common problems faced by buyers of modern enclosures – especially inexpensive ones. Manufacturers provide special mounts only for the hard drive, as an obvious source of mechanical vibrations, often forgetting about the fans. Let’s figure out how to install anti-vibration mounts on coolers and whether it makes sense at all.

What are the anti-vibration mounts
Modern PC cases can accommodate an average of 4-6 fans. Vendors put metal screws in the kit: this is how a rigid connection is obtained during installation. The rotational speed of coolers can reach 1200-1500 rpm, which is 20-25 rps. Having dispersed, they begin to vibrate together with the body. This is especially true for thin-walled models.

To avoid an unpleasant effect and reduce noise and hum, you need to “untie” the fans from the case covers. That is, to replace the rigid mount with a flexible one that is capable of damping vibrations. For this, special anti-vibration mounts were invented.

The most common option is the so-called nails. These are slotted fasteners made of silicone. There are many design options, but the essence remains the same.

They have high shock-absorbing properties, and the decoupling is achieved due to the fact that a small gap is formed between the cover and the fan housing:

There are shortened models. These do not have “tails” sticking out, but it is much more difficult to fix them:

There are, on the contrary, elongated nails – they fix the cooler on both sides. It is up to you to decide how much dual mount is needed.

These are only suitable for a standard 25 mm fan, consider this point when buying.

The second type of anti-vibration mounts are spacers. They come in the form of solid spacers – in this case, you will have to select for a specific fan size,
and as separate corners.

Poor-quality nails can dry out after a couple of years of use: lose volume, ossify and feel more like plastic to the touch. Spacers and corners are more practical in this regard – they usually last longer.

Manufacturers do not indicate a specific material of manufacture, usually limited to the word “silicone”. Sometimes, instead of “pure” silicone, you can find silicone rubber . Despite the fact that it retains its properties longer, such a material is initially more rigid, therefore it dampens vibration worse.

How to install and remove
How to install the gaskets is clear and without any instructions. Therefore, consider fixing a classic anti-vibration nail. We take it and pass it through the hole in the case. On the reverse side, we put on the fan, releasing the “tail” outward:

It remains only to pull this “tail”, holding the cooler case, and wait for a characteristic click:

As easy as shelling pears – even a child can handle it! It is better to buy mounts in large quantities at once in order to “fit” all the case propellers on them – otherwise there will be no effect.

Removing is even easier – just pull from the side of the cap, but do not apply too much force, otherwise the silicone will tear.

About hard-to-reach places
Sometimes it is difficult to crawl to a certain place of the case: as, for example, in the photo above, when the processor heatsink interferes with the installation of nails. If you don’t want to disassemble the system manager, the simplest life hack will help in such a situation – use tweezers.

It is much easier to hook the “tail” of an anti-vibration nail with its help, the main thing is not to overdo it with pressing force.
