Simplicity, convenience and aesthetics of Elementary OS make it an attractive solution for installation on PCs, laptops and other equipment. Even untrained users can quickly get used to and get used to the system – it is simpler than Windows and other distributions. Although the installation of this operating system looks simple enough, it will not be superfluous to study the step-by-step instructions on how to install Elementary OS.
This is not difficult. Those who have little experience in such matters will also be able to achieve the desired result. Advanced users can use additional settings to adapt the system to their needs. You can read more about what Elementary OS is and why you need it here , and in this material, only the installation and its options will be considered.
What you need to install
To do this, you need a flash drive with an image recorded on it. On the official website of Elementary OS, you can study the recommended system requirements, but there should be no problems with running on less productive hardware. At the moment, the current version of the OS is Elementary OS 5.1.7 Hera. The minimum parameters are indicated only for a flash drive – 2 GB or more.

Elementary OS is a free operating system, but donations are accepted by the developers. By opening the official website, you can see the popular amounts of voluntary transfers. To download the operating system for free, just click on the item “Other amount” and indicate the value “0”. The download button is then unlocked. You can download Elementary OS directly or via the magnet link. The first option is simpler, the second is faster.
Next, you need a utility to write an image to a USB flash drive. For this, Unetbootin, UltraISO or Rufus are suitable. Let’s consider image recording using the last option as an example. You can download the Rufus utility from the official site – it’s free software.
After clicking the “Start” button, several warning windows will appear. In all cases, you can agree and continue recording.
We recommend that you transfer all important files from your computer to avoid losing or accidentally erasing them during installation.
Installation instructions for Elementary OS
The general procedure is preserved when replacing the OS, reinstalling and installing Elementary OS “next to” an existing OS. The main differences are described in Partitioning a Disk (Step 6).
Step 1: Download the installation stick
At this point, we need to set the bootable USB stick as the priority drive. This is usually done through the BIOS. To enter it, you need to press the appropriate key when turning on the PC or laptop: “F2”, “DEL”, “ESC” – which one is indicated on the start page immediately after switching on. Didn’t have time – it’s okay, you can restart your PC and try again.
As a result, a window will appear on the screen where you need to select “Try or install Elementary OS”.
Step 2: start installation
Everything is simple here: in the list on the left, you need to select the interface language, and in the central window, select “Install Elementary”.
You can also start the operating system and try to work with it to make sure it is comfortable. In this case, the installation can be started in the Live version itself.
Step 3: keyboard layout
Here you need to select the language and specify the layout of interest.
Step 4: Connect to the Internet
The installation wizard will prompt you to connect to the Internet by selecting the appropriate option from the list. Connecting during installation will be useful for downloading updates, including drivers.
Step 5: Updating the system and installing drivers
The next step is prompted to install all available updates during installation. Of course, with an available Internet connection.
In the second paragraph, you can mark the installation of the necessary drivers. Thus, you can supply all the software necessary for the operation of the equipment. On the other hand, one may come across the opinion that it is better to refuse it. This is due to possible issues with Wi-Fi drivers and Nvidia graphics cards. You can install the drivers after installing the OS or immediately, and in case of problems, just use the second option when reinstalling.
Step 6: Partitioning the disks
The simplest case is when Elementary OS is reinstalled or replaced by another distribution. Then select the appropriate item “Erase disk and install Elementary OS” in the window that appears.
If you need this operating system to become the only one after switching from Windows, or you need to put two systems on one PC, then select the “Other option” item. In the window that opens, you need to free up space and create a new partition that meets the requirements for installation.
New section parameters:
The swap partition (swap) – Performs a similar function of the swap file in Windows. The recommended size corresponds to the amount of RAM, but it is desirable that the total comes out at least 10 GB. It will be possible to set the size after installing the OS, but it is better to do it right away.
Step 8: create a user
Here you need to specify your username and password. For the first time, while you need to configure the system, it is better to choose a simple password – the system will often ask you for it when installing programs.
Here you can also disable password entry at startup altogether.
Step 9: install and reboot
Now you need to wait for the installation to complete and restart the system. When the computer restarts, you can remove the USB flash drive.
Step 10: Initial system setup
Immediately after loading the newly installed operating system, Elementary OS will offer to configure the system. A kind of welcome window. After that, the system is ready for work and further customization.
