How to install a food waste disposer

A food waste disposer, or disposer, is a convenient device installed under the kitchen sink. The device literally grinds up the garbage and, together with the water, leads it into the sewer. But in order for the shredder to work for a long time, it must be installed correctly. Follow the recommendations and the experience of use will only be positive.

Kitchen sink requirements
The food waste disposer is a heavy appliance. Weight, depending on the model, can be from 6 to 12 kg. The device also creates vibration during operation. Based on this, increased requirements for the kitchen sink are formed.

The disposer can only be installed on sinks with a drain hole with a diameter of 90 mm or more.

Various materials are suitable – stainless steel (thickness not less than 1 mm), artificial or natural stone (thickness from 10 mm, but not more than 33 mm).

The kitchen sink can be both overhead and mortise . But it should be borne in mind that the mortise sink must not only be glued, but also additionally reinforced with metal brackets. It is not recommended to install the shredder on a sink, made in the form of a single unit with a table top, as vibration can destroy the seams.

Consider installing the Insinkerator Evolution 150 disposer on a steel sink:

Required additional accessories
Contrary to popular misconception, the shredder does not have a built-in siphon. Moreover, an ordinary bottle siphon cannot be installed, otherwise, at the first start, a blockage will occur. Use only tubular – U-shaped or P / S-shaped:

Do not use a corrugated hose for connection to the sewer system.

Food waste is guaranteed to remain in the folds between the ribs and after several uses the system will be completely clogged. Instead of a hose, you must use a smooth sewer pipe with a diameter of 40 mm, and preferably 50 mm. In order to bring the pipe to the right place with the desired slope, sewer bends should be used. These are special corners that come in various bends: 15, 30, 45, 67, 87 degrees.

Instruments
For the correct installation of the waste disposer you will need:

Construction knife or scissors.
Hacksaw – in order to cut the sewer pipe to the required length.
Phillips screwdriver .A scribe pencil.
Hole saw for wood – if the table top is made of MDF, fiberboard or solid wood.
Diamond crown – if the top is made of quartz agglomerate, acrylic, marble or granite.

Installing the Quick Lock Assembly
The assembly is installed on the kitchen sink drain, and the shredder is attached to it. The Quick Lock assembly consists of:

Insert the flange with the rubber gasket from the kit into the kitchen sink drain:

Put on it in turn from below: rubber gasket, cardboard gasket (if any), support ring, mounting ring, retaining ring.

To slide the split retaining ring onto the flange, simply push it down firmly. No additional tools needed:

Align the markings on the flange with the sink:

Tighten the spacer screws with a screwdriver. Tighten them evenly.

Connecting the drain tube and siphon to the grinder
Before mounting the shredder to the Quick Lock assembly, it is best to first connect the drain tube with a siphon to the shredder.

The siphon provides a water barrier that prevents the penetration of unpleasant odors from the sewer system:

On the Insinkerator Evolution 150, a drain tube with an elbow is inserted into the outlet of the chopper and secured with a spring clip. But in other models of devices, the drain tube and the way it is connected may look different. Check the manufacturer’s instructions.

Note that many shredders have an inlet at the top of the outlet above the outlet. Its hole is plugged with a plastic cover that can be knocked out, for example, with a screwdriver. The socket is designed for connecting a dishwasher drain. But it is better to leave the branch pipe closed, bringing the drain directly into the sewer pipe through the tee. Otherwise, in the event of a blockage, the dispenser can push the shredded waste directly into the dishwasher hose.

It is strictly not recommended to connect a kitchen sink overflow to the inlet. Since the branch pipe is connected to the chamber where the grinding takes place, during the operation of the device, particles of waste can be thrown into it. And since water almost never flows through the overflow, they will remain not washed away and over time will begin to smell unpleasant.

In addition, the noise of the chopper through the overflow hole will spread throughout the kitchen.

The spring clamp ensures the tightness of the connection. It is a required part, otherwise the flow of water may disrupt the drain pipe. The narrow top part is used to connect the kitchen sink overflow:

Chopper assembly
Be careful not to drop the chopper as it is quite heavy. To avoid injury, do not put your fingers under the appliance during installation.

Screw the dispenser onto the Quick Lock assembly. After it is securely attached to the mounting ring, insert the supplied service key into the lug and tighten the fastener counterclockwise until it stops:

Connect the drain pipe to the sink overflow:

And connect the siphon with a pipe and bends to the sewer. Remember that you need to provide a slope for the pipes, about 2-3 cm per meter:

Otherwise, some of the waste will get stuck at the bottom point and will not be able to go into the sewer.

Installing the pneumatic button
If your shredder is equipped with a pneumatic on / off button, make a hole in the worktop (33mm diameter for most models, check instructions). You can drill it with a hole saw for wood or a diamond core bit. The choice is simple: MDF, fiberboard or solid – hole saw. Agglomerate, acrylic, marble or granite – diamond crown. It is better to seal the edges of the hole in wooden countertops with a sealant.

Place the button conveniently next to the tap :

Indeed, in order to start grinding, it is imperative to turn on the water, and when finished, turn it off.

Don’t be afraid to use the button with wet hands. It is pneumatic and is powered by air compression. Electric shock is guaranteed not to hit you. And if water gets into the body of the button, then it is also not scary. It is enough to put a few dry napkins on top and press a couple of times. Any excess moisture will be absorbed into the paper.

After drilling the hole, install the button along with the shims supplied. Assembly order:

Measure the air tube to the required length and cut with a construction knife.

Push one end of the tube onto the chopper fitting. It is located at the bottom of the appliance.

And put the other end of the tube on the fitting of the pneumatic button:Make sure the tubing is fully pushed in and fits snugly. Otherwise, when you press the button, when the pressure rises, it will simply disconnect.

If for some reason you do not want to make a hole in the tabletop for the pneumatic button, then a shredder with a wireless function, for example, the Bort Alligator Max, will suit you. It is enough to stick the switch on double-sided tape in a convenient place.

It is also possible to purchase separately switches with remote control , which will turn any pneumatically operated shredder into a wireless one:

Follow the safety precautions and manufacturer’s recommendations.

In no case should you use a simple electrical switch installed “in the break” of the power wire!Remember that in all connection options, the socket must be for a CEE 7/4 Schuko or CEE 7/7 plug with a mandatory earthing contact. Connect the shredder to the power supply.Final view:

Splash bar and stopper
After completing the installation work, insert the splash guard under the sink. It is made of dense rubber:

When waste is fed into the grinding chamber, it opens and then closes on its own, protecting you not only from water droplets, but also from unnecessary noise.

Also, depending on the configuration, a special stopper can be supplied. This is a stainless steel filter mesh with a plug and a lid that protects the chopper from accidental ingestion of cutlery and small items:

But some sinks already have their own removable grill. In this case, it is better not to install the stopper:

Examination
In order to make sure that everything is assembled correctly, you need to close the sink drain with a plug (if it is not provided in the complete set, you can use a plate of a suitable size) and collect some water. After a couple of minutes, check for moisture in the joints under the sink:

If everything is in order, it is necessary to check the operation of the shredder. First, on a small amount of waste. For example, lettuce leaves and dry napkins are suitable:
