How to choose a refrigerator

If you are asked what the kitchen cannot do without, most likely you will definitely answer – without a stove and a refrigerator. We are accustomed to storing food in refrigerators, and we can no longer live without these devices. Sooner or later, the time comes to replace a broken or too old apparatus, and if you think that there are few selection criteria for refrigerators, then you are greatly mistaken.

Refrigerator with hinged doors ( Side by Side ) is a “plus size” model, where the freezer and refrigerator occupy almost the same volume. The largest unit that takes up quite a lot of space. Although the main feature of this form factor is not so much volume as the equally convenient access to both the freezer compartment and the refrigerator compartment, you do not have to constantly bend over or stretch. The large volume of such a refrigerator, of course, has advantages: you can buy groceries on weekends for a week and lay them out with comfort. When choosing such a model, you should pay attention to the location of the freezer, it can be on the left or right .

A full-size fridge-freezer is a classic choice for most people. Combines two devices – refrigerator and freezer. The location of the freezer can be both top and bottom . This does not affect the uniformity of product cooling, but it does affect the convenience of use. It is much more convenient to take products in demand when they are stored on the same level with the body. This form factor has earned its popularity due to its versatility, rather compact size and variety – you can find both large models that compete in volume with swing, and small ones.

A full-size refrigerator without a freezer is the choice of people who don’t need a freezer compartment. At first glance, this model does not seem very practical, and is mainly preferred by those who have a free-standing freezer. But there is a benefit in the combination of the two types of equipment: firstly, you do not need to spend a lot of space in the kitchen for a large device by pushing the freezer somewhere outside the kitchen space (onto the balcony, into the corridor). Secondly, if suddenly one of the devices fails, the second will be able to back it up, not letting the products go to waste.

A compact refrigerator is the smallest type of design that takes up the least amount of space. Rescue for small or island kitchens. Sometimes compact refrigerators are used as recessed under the countertop, installing them one at a time or in pairs – this option is cheaper than using specialized models.

Multi-door models . The number of doors can be up to five pieces. Multiple compartments can be used to make the device more economical. Instead of one large door, you open a small one, i.e. only the compartment that is needed. At this time, all other compartments remain closed, which means that excess cold does not go away.

The refrigerated display case is used in trade establishments where there is a need to demonstrate the goods to the buyer in their natural storage environment. They can be table-top, floor-standing and wall-mounted. The choice of a showcase, first of all, depends on the availability of free space in the room and the needs of the institution. In residential premises, this type of refrigeration equipment is used for decoration.

Defrosting technology
The types of defrosting in freezing and refrigerating chambers of the same device can be different – to reduce the cost or reduce the volume of the structure.

Manual (for freezer compartments only) is a good old method where you have to do everything with your handles. In such a refrigerator, over time, an ice “coat” with a thickness of more than 5 mm will form. To fix it, you will need to disconnect the device from the network, take out all the products, and remove everything that has frozen – the process will not be quick. But the price of structures with such defrosting is usually the lowest. Modern refrigerators are well insulated. The process of “fur coat” formation takes a long time and can take up to a year. Taking into account the recommendations of the manufacturers about the obligatory cleaning of the refrigerator once a year, manual defrosting does not so often affect the comfort of using the refrigerator.
Automatic or drip (only for refrigerated compartments) is a more advanced technology that allows you to significantly save time on defrosting. A cooling element is installed in the refrigerator, which works cyclically: it turned on, froze the required temperature – turned off, the frost that froze on the walls melted and dripped into the evaporator compartment. The advantages of this system can be safely called the low cost and the fact that the humidity mode in the refrigerator is normal – the products do not dry out or become aired. Minus design – the condensate drainage channel sometimes gets clogged, and you have to defrost the refrigerator manually, and then clean the channel.
No Frost (used for freezing and refrigerating compartments) – the refrigerator is equipped with a special blowing system that prevents the main part of condensate from accumulating on the walls. Residual condensate accumulates on the periodically heated evaporator, and from there flows into the evaporation compartment. Thanks to this system, you can forget about defrosting the refrigerator. But it also has drawbacks: due to the constant circulation of air flows, products without packaging quickly lose moisture, and the defrosting unit itself takes up a lot of the internal volume of the installation. Accordingly, the refrigerator is larger in size than its counterparts of the same volume, but without No Frost.

Compressor
The heart of the refrigerator, as you know, is the compressor – a device that ensures the operation of the installation. The most common are linear and inverter compressors. It is the compressor that makes the refrigerant (freon gas is most often used) to move from one state of aggregation to another, thereby starting the process of cold formation in all chambers of the refrigerator. There are models with and without an inverter compressor control unit. Non-inverter compressors are called conventional compressors.

Conventional compressors work according to the scheme: you set the temperature on the thermostat, and the refrigerator cools the inner space to the desired value, then turns off. As soon as the temperature rises, the compressor starts up again – the cycles are constantly repeated. The compressor start-up process is vibrated and consumes significant starting current.
Inverter compressors work a little differently – when the required temperature is reached, the compressor reduces the speed to a minimum and maintains the temperature. This saves both electricity (the maximum energy consumption goes during the start-up period) and the compressor resource (the most difficult mode for equipment is start-up). The manufacturer’s warranty for models with inverter compressors can be up to 10 years. Therefore, despite the somewhat higher cost, inverter compressors are ultimately more economical. The reduced noise level will be a pleasant bonus.

Some models are equipped with two compressors – this measure was also invented to save money. Indeed, in such installations, compressors of lower power are used, and you can choose the mode of operation from one compressor, partially using the volume of the refrigerator – a convenient function if the filling of the chamber with food changes depending on the season. In the event of a breakdown of one of the compressors, the remaining second will help preserve the food.

The compressors themselves can be implemented in different ways:

Linear compressor – an electromagnetic coil in one plane controls the movement of the piston, which compresses the refrigerant. The movements are linear, which reduces wear on the device and further reduces energy consumption.
Rotary compressor – at the heart of the work is a connecting rod mechanism with circular movements.
This refrigerator with a linear inverter compressor is ideal for a quiet, energy efficient kitchen with a long service life.

The refrigerator, as a constantly working technique, “eats” decently – from several tens to hundreds of kilowatts per year. When choosing a model, it is better to take this factor into account, and give preference to more energy efficient devices , with energy consumption classes from A + and higher. For refrigerators, the minimum energy consumption limit A + coincides with the maximum A ++, therefore, additional attention should be paid to the consumption in W / h.

Indication – a kind of “reminder” that attracts attention in different situations – if you forget to close the door, or if the power supply suddenly turns off

Protection from children is a function implemented in different ways in different models, but in the end it works for one purpose – so that little pranksters do not make their own adjustments to the operation of equipment. Usually performed in the form of blocking control buttons.

Antibacterial coatings and filters are the latest developments of manufacturers to maintain the high quality of products when stored in the refrigerator. In devices with these options, the level of development of unfavorable microorganisms is much less, which means that an unpleasant smell will not bother you. However, such models also need to be washed periodically, in accordance with the recommendations of the technical manual.

Selection Tips
Carefully selected, taking into account all the needs, the refrigerator will delight you for many years. But if you make a mistake and choose not quite the right model, you will constantly think about the money spent on the wind, or be indignant because of the lack of volume. Refrigerators are not the cheapest technique, so the wrong choice is doubly unpleasant.
The choice of a refrigerator should start with a clear understanding of how much space you can take for this type of equipment. If the kitchen cannot boast of a large area , install a narrow model with a low height or even a refrigerator without a freezer (if you have a free-standing freezer).

Swing-out and high-volume refrigerators (from 400 liters) will be the bestchoice for a large family, when even daily food is needed a lot. As a pleasant plus, after purchasing such a refrigerator, you will see that you have begun to spend less time in stores, visiting them only on weekends, with a pre-prepared list of products.

If you like smart appliances , pay attention to refrigerators with an external screen, various types of indications and child protection .

For lovers of summer cottages and suburban life on weekends , in the model chosen for a summer residence, reduced power consumption (up to 500 kW / h per year) and low cost will be valuable functions .

But for home storage of your crop, it is better to choose a large-volume model, with zero zones and a spacious No Frost freezer . Also, a good option for freezing vegetables, berries and herbs is the superfreezing mode (quick freezing, which allows you to keep maximum freshness).

If you often leave and you are not at home for several days , you should pay attention to small models with an inverter compressor and low power consumption . These options will be as economical as possible.

In a small apartment or living room, it is better to choose a small refrigerator with a low noise level – if you do not want to wake up in the middle of the night from compressor cycles.

For the kitchen equipped according to the design project , and the model of the refrigerator, the appropriate one must be selected. Fortunately, now manufacturers have moved away from the standard white-gray-black range, and offer models of almost any color (yellow, green, gold, brown, red, orange, blue) and stylistic design – from hi-tech to retro .
