How to change the appearance of app icons in iOS 14

The iOS 14 update for the first time allowed iPhone owners to change the appearance of their home screens: put photos, create new widgets, make their own application icons and place them in a convenient order. How to do it – in our detailed instructions.

Standard application icons give the iPhone a familiar look and feel. Until September 2020, users could not change it at their own discretion. With the release of iOS 14, there are finally some innovations for customization. Now the owners of iPhones and iPads themselves determine how many icons to place on the main screen, move them from place to place, place them in folders, insert widgets among the icons, and use several new wallpaper options to create thematic compositions on the desktop.

But the main thing is that now you can replace icons with other images! Basically, in iOS 14, this function is not provided, but back in 2018, Apple inserted an interesting “Quick Commands” feature into iOS 12, which is convenient to give to Siri. And although the application worked not only with a voice assistant, but also performed over 300 actions, it was not very popular. But in 2020, this tool came in handy for creative lovers. Social networks were full of instructions and videos with detailed explanations of how to change the icons on the iPhone, what and how to do so that the appearance of your favorite gadget takes on individuality.

Those interested were found and even arranged a competition, whose display design is more interesting. Some sorted standard icons by colors and shades, others removed them from the home screen, leaving only the application library there, and still others created their own icons. At the same time, users of iPhones with iOS 14 found that each icon would have to be installed separately. It took time, and the performance when replacing manually turned out to be low, but Apple has not yet come up with a batch method, like in Android.

Instructions for replacing application icons on an iPhone
To replace icons, prepare your own photos, pictures or graphic symbols from the Internet and upload them to the gallery.
Call up “Quick Commands”. This app is by default in iOS 14, but if you’ve uninstalled it, re-install it from the App Store.
Click on the plus in the upper right. A field with the words “Add action” will open, click on it.
Then hammer into the search “Open application” and go there.

In the list of icons of your applications that opens, find the one that you will change, for example, “Camera”, and click on it.
The icon will open. Three dots appear at the top right. By clicking on them, you will see an icon for the new team.
Give it a name, for example “Replacement”.
Tap the Add to Home Screen line.

Instead of the “New command” label, specify the name of the selected icon, old or new, and click on the icon itself.
A list of actions will open. Click on “Select Photo”.
Find a picture to replace in the gallery, click on the “Select” button at the bottom right, and “Add” in the field that appears at the top right.

Click on “Finish” to see what the new icon looks like on your desktop. The others can be replaced by the same principle.
Remove old app icons from the Home screen. Standard icons will be saved in the application library, from where they can be easily dragged back if you get tired of your own design.

Disadvantages of replacing icons via “Quick Commands”
New icons will open apps with a slight delay. When loading applications, you will see the inscription “Quick Commands” for 1-2 seconds. You can’t avoid this, but you can speed up the opening of applications by reducing their animations and transition effects. To do this, sequentially enter the sections: “Settings” -> “Universal access” -> “Motion” and enable the “Reduce motion” option. Launching applications will be further accelerated by connecting the “Select Crosstalk”.

Another inconvenience of creative icons is that the counter of messages and new posts in messengers or social networks is not visible on them. However, this has its own plus – saving the user’s time. If you don’t see tempting notifications, you’ll be less likely to see who posted what.

Other ways to change the look of your desktop
In addition to changing icons, widgets make the main screen unique. Some of them are offered by Apple itself, and at first the owners customized their displays with “Photos for You”, “Weather”, “Clock”, “Maps” and automatically generated widget sets – smart stacks. To do this, just make a few clicks:

click on an empty spot on the Home screen;
wait for a plus to appear at the top right and touch it, select a standard widget;
adjust its size and place it in the desired place on the screen.
But the desire to stand out, putting thematic collections for the judgment of friends, forced users to use the Widgetsmith app . Even its free version helps you create widgets in your own style, add your own portrait and the desired color. There are other similar apps like Photo Widget or Color Widgets .
Original widgets and icons have infused the “aesthetic themes” of desktops. It was with them that many users began their experiments, taking a certain theme as the basis for the design of the home screen:

In the six months since the release of iOS 14, there have been many options for customizing iPhone desktops. Not all icons and themed homepages posted on social networks are of a quality and taste, but for those who like to experiment, this is a good way to show off and look at the creations of others.
