The robot vacuum cleaner keeps your home clean. But in order for him to perform high-quality cleaning and to serve for a long time, it is important to know how to properly care for him.
Cleaning the case
Parts of the robot vacuum cleaner need to be cleaned after use. Moreover, different parts have their own frequency and their own way of service. But for many models of vacuum cleaners, the procedure will be almost the same due to the structural similarity. Consider the example of Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo 900.
If there is a small turret on the body of your vacuum cleaner, this is a laser navigation system (lidar). The high-precision device is designed in such a way that practically no dust falls on the source and receiver of the laser beam. No cleaning or maintenance required.
Dirt and dust on the device case can be removed with a slightly damp cloth. Remember not to use alcohol or abrasive cleaners.
Cleaning the wet cleaning system
If your robot vacuum cleaner has a wet cleaning function, then you need to clean the parts after each use. To do this, detach the floor plate and water tank:
Remove the napkin from the plate. It is secured with a sticky clasp.
It is enough to rinse the napkin under running water and soap. But you cannot install wet parts on the robot vacuum cleaner if you do not want to immediately start cleaning again. Otherwise, a damp cloth with prolonged contact with the floor in one place can ruin the floor covering. And due to the evaporation of water, fogging of the optical sensors of the vacuum cleaner and oxidation of the electronic board is possible.
After cleaning, it is necessary to drain the water from the tank through the filler neck. Remember that it is best to fill only filtered water into the tank. This reduces the likelihood that deposits will clog the feed system over time. Do not use detergents.
Cleaning the trash bin
Then you need to remove the garbage container. Depending on the model, it can be under the lid or on the side of the case, like a water tank.
It is best to empty the waste container after each cleaning. Dust creates an additional obstacle to the passage of air – the suction power decreases and the cleaning quality decreases.
The container consists of a plastic container and, as a rule, three filters: the coarsest mesh (in the lid), the middle one made of foam rubber, and the thinnest one HEPA.
You can simply empty the garbage from the container.
The foam filter and waste bin can be rinsed in the sink and then dried with paper towels. Remember that wet parts must not be placed in the vacuum cleaner.
It is not necessary to wash the container every time. But it is better to do this at least once a week.
The HEPA filter is made of accordion-folded fibrous material. Over time, dust accumulates on the filter surface, which makes it difficult for air to pass through. This affects the suction power and the air cleaning efficiency.
Most HEPA filters cannot be washed. Large debris and dust can be carefully removed from the surface with a special brush that comes with the robot vacuum cleaner.
If the filter is very dirty, it should be replaced with a new one.
Washable filters are an exception. They are marked with the letter W for Washable. The marking is indicated either on the body of the filter itself, or in the documentation. Cleaning the brushes
Be sure to turn off the Robot Vacuum Cleaner before further cleaning and servicing. There is a switch on the case that physically breaks the battery circuit. It can be either under the cover or on the side of the device.
Do not turn the Robot Vacuum Cleaner upside down with the full wet cleaning tank attached, as water may leak out and enter the interior of the device.
When flipping the Robot Vacuum Cleaner, be careful not to damage the protruding turret. Even minor damage and misalignment of geometry can lead to lidar breakage.
A direct suction module or a turbo brush can be installed on the bottom of the robot.
The direct suction module does not require any special maintenance. It is enough to wipe it with a damp cloth.
But hair, threads and animal hair can be wound on the turbo brush. And not only on the main part with bristles, but also on the attachment point.
Cleaning can be done using a special tool with a cutting edge, which is included with the vacuum cleaner. But if it was not at hand, you can use ordinary scissors.
Then you need to inspect the side brushes. Hair can also wrap around them, impairing sweeping.
The brushes can be removed for easy cleaning.
Cleaning contacts and wheels
There are metal plates at the edge. These are the contacts through which the battery is charged. Must be checked weekly. In case of contamination, clean it, otherwise they may become very hot and fail due to increased electrical resistance.
A universal swivel wheel is located next to the contacts. Hair can wind on it and on the rear wheel. Cleaning should also be done weekly.
In exceptional cases, if too much hair is wound on the shafts and it is impossible to remove them, the wheels can be removed using an ordinary flat screwdriver, gently prying from below. But do not do this too often, as the seat can be broken, and the shaft will no longer be fixed in it.
It is also necessary to periodically inspect the drive wheels. They can wrap around hair or animal hair.
Cleaning the sensors
The cleanliness of the sensors should be checked weekly. On the bottom of the robot there are fall prevention sensors. The bumper has anti-collision sensors on the sides – in the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo 900 they are located behind a black plastic trim and glow faintly purple in the camera lens. Contamination of the sensors calls out errors: the vacuum cleaner can suddenly stop, as if there is an abyss in front of it, or even spin in place, trying to drive away from non-existent walls.

Cleaning the charging station
Don’t forget to clean the charging station. In order for the robot vacuum cleaner to be able to accurately drive on it, an infrared LED is located on the body behind the black plastic. If it is covered with dust, the robot simply will not see it. It is also necessary to inspect and, if necessary, clean the contact pad. Remember to remove the plug from the socket before cleaning the base.
The app displays the status of the accessories. But it is important to understand that the resource is indicated approximately. For example, the degree of wear of the brushes will depend on the type of flooring, whether there is a lot of furniture with sharp corners in the house and what kind of skirting boards are installed in the rooms. And the condition of the filter is how dusty it is in the apartment.
But do not immediately change the brushes if the application shows that they are completely worn out – compare them with the spare ones and assess the condition.
If you notice that the accessories have become unusable, replace them. As a rule, spare parts are supplied with a robot vacuum cleaner, and if they are not provided in the complete set or they have run out, it is possible to purchase new ones in the store.
If you plan not to use the robot for a long time, turn off the power button of the vacuum cleaner and disconnect the docking station from the mains. But the next time you turn it on, given the natural self-discharge of the battery, you will have to recharge it. Be guided by the battery status information via the smartphone app. Remember that if the battery is completely discharged, the charging time, depending on the battery capacity, can be about four hours.
