Common mistakes when using the microwave

Microwaves are one of the most common household appliances today and are actively used by owners for defrosting, heating, cooking and other purposes. However, not everyone is well acquainted with the various nuances of the correct operation of these units. Mistakes when using microwave ovens can lead to damage to food, dishes and the device itself.

Use the wrong dishes
The inadmissibility of placing metal dishes in the microwave is, perhaps, the main rule of operating microwave ovens, which everyone is more or less aware of. It rarely happens when someone, out of forgetfulness, uses metal utensils in the microwell. However, many people encounter cases when dishes with small metal elements or metallized painting (gilding) are placed in a microwave oven.

Most often, such troubles happen with dishes freshly acquired or extracted from the bowels of the sideboard, the metallized elements of the painting on which are not particularly noticeable. In order to avoid a sudden “pyrotechnic show” in the oven, it is recommended that before placing an unfamiliar plate or mug into the chamber, make sure that there is nothing that might sparkle. Discharges arising between metal objects and the walls of the oven are by no means safe and can cause serious damage to the device.

In addition to metal / metallized utensils, it is not recommended to use crystal (contains lead or silver), raw ceramics, glass or ceramic utensils with cracks, disposable utensils made of paper, cardboard, styrofoam (expanded polystyrene), plastic utensils / containers not intended for use in microwave ovens. for microwave ovens (without appropriate marking).

Plastic food containers are mainly suitable for heating or low-temperature cooking, and heat-resistant glassware should be used for microwave cooking at all temperatures . Heating products in foil or in foil packages is permissible only if there is a special inscription or marking allowing the use of foil in microwave ovens.

It is not recommended to defrost meat in the microwave until the end, since after thawing the meat, it will begin to fry at the edges, and the packaging will melt, deform and release harmful substances. To avoid this, you need to correctly set the defrosting duration, type and weight of the product to be defrosted.

During defrosting, it is advisable to stop the oven before the end of the program and check the consistency of the meat. If it is already soft, stop defrosting. This is especially true for fish, as it defrosts rather quickly.

An alternative and safe method of defrosting is to leave the meat in the refrigerator for a few hours. Fish for accelerated defrosting can be placed in cold or slightly warm water (no higher than 40 degrees) at room temperature. Do not use hot water, as the fish will start to cook in it. When defrosting minced meat, you need to take breaks and remove the thawed parts so that they do not start to fry.

In order not to have problems with defrosting, it is recommended to cut large pieces of meat into small pieces before freezing, and cut the whole chicken. It is worth considering that repeated freezing / thawing of meat leads to a deterioration in its taste.

Don’t know about the modern functions of microwaves
Some buyers of microwave ovens do not take into account the presence of certain useful functions in the units they choose, since they have no idea about them, do not fully use their full potential due to technical ignorance.

So microwave ovens with convection can be used as an oven. In models with inverter power control, food is heated more evenly. If the budget allows, it makes sense to give preference to the option with a display, automatic cooking, heating and defrosting programs. Models without a turntable (usually inverter) allow the use of large-sized and irregularly shaped dishes.

When choosing, you should also pay attention to the coating of the oven chamber. If you plan to use it only for heating and defrosting, any coating will do. For cooking, a ceramic or bioceramic coating will be preferable – such materials are more amenable to cleaning .

Do not stir food while heating
When heating food on the stove, it is usually stirred, while heating it in the microwave, as a rule, it is not considered necessary to do this, and in vain. Stirring occasionally will speed up heating and make it more even, while preventing the top layer of food from boiling and splattering.

Use tightly closed containers or jars
The use of tightly closed containers or cans in microwave ovens, especially with liquid contents, can lead to the fact that steam accumulating during heating, cooking or pasteurization will tear off the lid at a certain moment and the walls of the chamber will be splashed. To avoid this, it is recommended not to close the lid tightly. However, reheating open food can also lead to splattering.

Boil eggs incorrectly
If, as a result of inept boiling of eggs on the stove, they can crack, then improper cooking of eggs in the microwave sometimes ends with an egg explosion and the subsequent tedious cleaning of the chamber. To prevent such troubles, a number of requirements must be met. The cooking utensil should be deep enough to completely hide the eggs in the water. The water level above the eggs should be at least one centimeter. First you need to add a teaspoon of salt to the water and stir it.

Warm milk for the baby
When heated in a microwave oven, milk heats up unevenly – some areas will be hot and others will be warm. As a result, the child may burn himself. And this is not the only problem. It is believed that microwave radiation can negatively change the structure of milk and formula milk. This includes destroying immune-stimulating proteins and converting some amino acids into toxic D-isomers. A safer method is to use a special bottle warmer .

Dry things
Some people manage to use the microwave oven as a dryer . However, this method of drying things is fraught with a number of pitfalls. As a result of such procedures, synthetics are deformed and melted. There is a risk of ignition of various materials.

Install the microwave oven incorrectly
The installation of the microwave oven should be carried out strictly in a horizontal plane, avoiding distortions. There should be no sources of high temperatures or steam in the immediate vicinity of the device. To ensure normal ventilation, the distance from the back wall of the microwave oven should be at least 10 cm, and from the side walls at least 8 cm.

It is not recommended to place the microwave oven too high so that it would be handy to take out the dishes later without spilling anything. Also, do not cover it or place large objects on it.

The advantage of built-in microwave models is the ability to place the device in the zone and at the height where it will be most convenient, and not where there is free space to put the oven.
