KARACHI: Presidential Award winning comedian Lahri has passed away nine years ago.
Actor Lahri’s real name was Safirullah Siddiqui. Born in 1929, he began his film career in the 1950s with black and white films. He came to Pakistan and got his first job as a stenographer.
He spoke on the radio, in the 1956 film Anokhi, he had the opportunity to show the essence of acting, Asif Jah, Nazar, Manozarif and Yaqub were parrots in the film industry at that time.
Lehri made a name for himself among these tall comedians due to his distinctive style. Lehri, who started his career with the film Anokhi, had a film journey of thirty years till his last film Dhanak. He has acted in more than 220 films in total.
In recognition of his services to the arts, he was awarded 12 Nigar Awards and the Presidential Medal for Excellence in 1996. The dialogues spoken in a unique lip and accent were the hallmark of the wave. The audience used to burst into laughter when they heard them.
After suffering a stroke during a shooting in Bangkok in 1985, Lahri continued to suffer from chronic illnesses and was reunited with Khaliq Haqiqi on September 13, 2012.
