It is difficult to imagine cleaning an apartment or a private house without a vacuum cleaner. If you are going to update this technique, then it is advisable to know the nuances on which the ease of use will directly depend. In this article, we will tell you about the most common mistakes that users make when buying a vacuum cleaner.
Choose the wrong type: home instead of building and vice versa
Household vacuum cleaners will not handle construction waste, while building models will be too noisy and bulky for simple home use. Construction vacuum cleaners are designed for cleaning in places such as:
workshops where there is a lot of dust or shavings;
services for cleaning computers and other electrical equipment.
If you need a vacuum cleaner for one of the above scenarios, then feel free to buy a construction one. A household model is suitable for cleaning apartments and private houses.
How to distinguish a construction vacuum cleaner from a home vacuum cleaner – it is best to immediately clarify this information with the seller. The construction models have large dimensions, high suction power from 450 W and a waste container for 20-100 liters.
Choose the wrong power
This is one of the key parameters of the vacuum cleaner, which determines the strength of the suction flow. In stores, you can find models with a suction power from 15 to 800 watts.
Do not confuse this parameter with power consumption, which usually ranges from 30 to 3000 W and determines the power of the motor.
To determine which suction power will be optimal for cleaning your home, you need to clearly define the type of work surfaces:
Suction power, W Application features
10-50 As a rule, small battery models. Suitable for local cleaning of small areas, as well as car interiors
50-100 Vertical models and robotic vacuum cleaners. Suitable for easy cleaning of dust and small debris on lint-free surfaces
100-200 Low-power models for high-quality cleaning of apartments and private houses with linoleum, parquet, tiles and similar coatings
200-350 Medium power models. Used for cleaning carpets and carpets with light pile
350-600 Powerful versatile models to handle large pile and pet hair
If there are no carpets in the apartment or house, then a vacuum cleaner with a suction power of up to 350 W will be enough for you. Does it make sense to buy a vacuum cleaner with a power reserve? This may slightly extend the service life, since the motor will not operate at maximum speed, but only at 50-80% of its power. On the other hand, it will be an irrational use of the potential of the device, and you will overpay for extra watts when buying.
Don’t think about the type of dust collector
A dust collector is a special bag or container in which all waste is collected. How high-quality cleaning and easy cleaning will be directly depends on the type of dust collector. Saving or even ignoring this component often leads to inconvenience. All dust collectors can be divided into four main groups:
Dust collector type Advantages disadvantages
Disposable bag Easy to remove, no need to dust off Constant purchase of new bags, low tightness
Reusable bag Can be used for almost the entire life of the vacuum cleaner, light weight Shake out regularly, not suitable for allergy sufferers and dust-sensitive people, low tightness
Plastic container Unlimited service life, high tightness, reliability, ease of use It is required to periodically wash a container heavier than bags
Aquafilter The most efficient dust collector, traps fine dust particles in water, suitable for allergy sufferers Vacuum cleaners with an aquafilter are more expensive and larger, the aquafilter should be thoroughly washed
If you are allergic or have children at home, then it is best to buy a vacuum cleaner with an aquafilter, which has a minimum dust output. For regular cleaning of large areas, a plastic container is suitable – it is easier to clean and does not need to be changed. If cleaning is periodic, less than once a week, then you can choose disposable, reusable bags or pay extra and take a model with a container.
The second thing to know when choosing a dust collector is its volume. An average family of three produces about 1-1.5 kg of dust per month. Carpet pile and pet hair can add another 0.5-1 kg per month. Most standard vacuum cleaners have a dust container of 1–6 liters.
Dust bags up to 3 liters are suitable for weekly cleaning. You will need to clean it once every 1-2 weeks. If cleaning is performed more often than once a week, then it is better to buy a vacuum cleaner with a dust collector of three liters or more. This will allow you to empty the bag or container less frequently.
Overshot in size and weight
It is worth thinking about the weight and dimensions of a new vacuum cleaner in several cases. If you have:
multi-storey private house or apartment with a second floor;
there are high thresholds between rooms, small staircases and ascents;
cleaning will be done by pensioners;
limited storage space for equipment.
The lightest and most comfortable are vertical vacuum cleaners weighing about 2–4 kg. They are suitable for cleaning small spaces. But most of the classic models weigh about 4-6 kg – they move on wheels. It is not difficult to roll them on the floor or carpet, but it will be inconvenient to climb the stairs, as well as to roll them over the rapids.
Models with aquafilter can only be used and carried horizontally.
You should also first estimate the storage space for the vacuum cleaner – it should be suitable in height, width and depth. You can always find these characteristics in the technical description of the gadget. Do not forget that you will also need space to store containers, attachments and other accessories.
Underestimate the wet cleaning function
Vacuum cleaners from the mid-high price category have a wet cleaning mode among the additional functions. The design has a compartment for detergent, a special pump and several spray nozzles. High pressure fluid is sprayed over the surface to be cleaned. After that, through a special nozzle, together with the dirt, it is sucked back.
A washing vacuum cleaner will be redundant for small apartments. Such models are rather cumbersome, and installation of all components for washing with subsequent dismantling can take 5-10 minutes. During this time, you can easily clean the floors with a regular mop than use and collect a heavy washing vacuum cleaner.
Vacuum cleaners are most effective when cleaning large areas with ceramic tiles, laminate or stone floors. Washing models are less effective when cleaning carpets or carpets with long pile.
If you still decide to buy a washing vacuum cleaner, then pay attention to the volume of the liquid tank. For two- and one-room apartments, a tank for 2-4 liters is enough. For houses with 3-5 rooms, it is best to take a tank of 4-6 liters. For cleaning large cottages or multi-room country houses, it is worth taking equipment with a water tank of 8-10 liters.
Underestimate the noise level
Many are willing to put up with a lot of noise for a couple of hours while cleaning. However, if there are small children in the house or you simply do not like loud sounds, then the noise level of the vacuum cleaner becomes one of the priority parameters.
The noise level of various models varies from 60 to 85 dB. How loud is it? The noise of an ordinary conversation is estimated at 60 dB, so vacuum cleaners with a similar indicator can be called relatively quiet. The noise from the hairdryer is 90 dB on average.
Do not pay attention to the length of the suction pipe
This parameter is relevant for tall people, since a short pipe will cause discomfort during cleaning and pain in the back. By the type of design, suction pipes are divided into two main categories:
Telescopic . Consists of two pipes of different diameters – one is inside the other and extends to a certain distance. A universal option for most users, however, for some people, the maximum length may not be enough.
Composite . Consists of several segments. It may be less reliable, but by increasing the segments it will be possible to obtain additional length.
Forget about the length of the cord
The length of the power cord in most vacuum cleaners is 0.6-10 meters. If the cable is too short, you will have to change the outlet many times, which is a waste of time and effort.
For one-room and two-room apartments, models with a 4–6 meter cord are enough. If there is an outlet in the hallway, you don’t even have to switch the vacuum cleaner, with rare exceptions. For a house with three or more rooms, we recommend taking a vacuum cleaner with a 6-10 meter power cord. For assessment, you can use a tape measure to calculate the distance from the central outlet in the house to the farthest rooms. So you can roughly understand how long the cord should be.
Buy a vacuum cleaner with the wrong type of power supply: wired or cordless
What to do if there is not enough power cord for all rooms and you do not want to constantly change the place of connection to the outlets. This is where battery models come to the rescue . Cordless vacuum cleaners run on a built-in battery and are ideal for cleaning in several situations:
you have a small studio apartment;
you have a multi-room private house with a complex layout, which is why a wired vacuum cleaner is inconvenient to carry and switch;
you prefer short but frequent indoor cleaning;
you have pets after which it is necessary to collect wool frequently.
For all of the above scenarios, a cordless vacuum cleaner will work.
Such models usually have a small 0.3-0.8 liter dust collector and a suction power of up to 150 W, therefore they are not suitable for long-term cleaning and carpets. Also consider the capacity of the battery. On average, such vacuum cleaners work from 20 to 80 minutes, after which a recharge is required, which can take from 2 to 5 hours.
