Despite the functionality of smartphones, tablets are still used for some tasks in which the mobile phone is not comfortable or practical enough. If you are going to take a tablet, then study the list of common mistakes when buying.
Choosing the wrong screen diagonal
The key advantage of any tablet over a phone is its large screen size. This opens up additional use cases that make tablets still relevant today. However, there is a large diagonal variation in this category, and it directly affects ergonomics and functionality.
The first priority is to determine why you need a tablet at all.
Reading books, surfing the net, talking on the phone, car navigator, transportation
7-8 “tablets are not always suitable for movie viewing, especially if black bars appear around the edges due to aspect ratios. Tablets for 9.6-11 inches are almost universal, but it will be problematic to receive calls from them. Models with a diagonal of 11 inches and more are usually the most expensive and productive – they are worth buying for professional tasks (graphics, working with text, business).
Oversized screen resolution
For tablets, the display resolution ranges from 1025×600 to 2732×2048 pixels. The higher the resolution, the higher the cost of the device. To select the optimal resolution taking into account the diagonal, you need to determine or know the pixel density – PPI. The higher it is, the clearer the image will be and the less the visibility of the “mosquito net”.
When working in applications or a browser, we use the tablet at a distance of about 40 cm from our eyes. For such a distance, a density of 200-230 ppi is sufficient so that individual pixels are invisible. The same is enough for watching movies when you place the device at a distance of up to one meter from your eyes. It makes no sense to overpay for high density. The optimal resolution for these tasks is 1920 x 1080 pixels.
When working with graphics or reading, the distance from the screen to the eyes can be reduced by up to 20 centimeters. If on the text the “ribbing” of the image will be practically invisible, then in various pictures it immediately catches the eye. Here you need to look for models from 250 ppi, taking into account a comfortable screen diagonal.
For example, the Huawei Matepad Pro and Apple iPad Pro 2020 have a pixel density of 264 ppi, so they are great for artists.
The amount of RAM directly affects the performance of the device: how quickly programs will start, how smoothly the animation takes place, how long applications switch between themselves.
The minimum allowable volume for comfortable surfing the net and reading books is 2 GB . As a rule, these are inexpensive and simple tablets that are not designed for specific tasks.
If you like to watch movies at the same time and actively use many applications (messengers, social networks, financial applications), then we recommend looking for models with 3 GB or more RAM.
In stores: in 42 stores
The optimal amount of RAM for almost any daily task, including gaming, is 4 GB . This is enough for the comfortable work of most heavyweight applications and even subsequent OS versions, which are usually even more demanding on RAM.
For professional tasks (graphics, text editors, working with documents), you will need tablets with 6–8 GB of RAM. Such models, with the presence of software and a keyboard, may well replace full-fledged laptops.
Buying a tablet without a SIM card
Tablets exclusively with Wi-Fi are suitable for home use when there is a constant connection at the access point. They will also be relevant for stationary work, for example, if you constantly use a tablet to draw or write a book at home or in the office.
In all other cases, especially if you often travel with a gadget, you should add to the budget and buy a model with support for a SIM card. The 3G standard provides a maximum speed of up to 3 Mbps on average, but this is important for stationary objects. As soon as you start using the Internet on the go, the speed immediately drops to 384 kbps.
We recommend that you immediately take a tablet with 4G / LTE support. The fourth generation offers actual speeds up to 40 Mbps and around 15 Mbps for moving objects. Considering how much traffic is spent on content, buying a tablet with 3G for active surfing is irrational.
Insufficient storage and no memory card
Users often say that 16 GB of internal memory will be enough for them “headlong”. However, in fact, it turns out that some of it is allocated for the needs of the OS and the bootloader, some will be occupied by mandatory applications, and as a result, very little remains for personal needs. In such situations, the SD card slot helps out.
A dangerous mistake is when there is not enough memory for personal files, and the memory card is not supported by the model. You will have to delete less important data from the device in order to download something else. Never neglect the presence of an SD card slot and objectively evaluate how much information will be stored on the tablet.
For surfing the net, reading books and watching videos online, 16 GB models are really enough . If you plan to take your tablet on trips and load movies into memory, then you need a minimum of 32 GB . The internal memory of 64 GB is usually sufficient for applications, games and personal files.
Tablets for 128-1024 GB are more suitable for professional use when you need to store heavy specialized software and hundreds of important files.

The race for a quality camera
Photo and video shooting in tablets is not a priority function – for these purposes smartphones have long been used, in which optics have approached the level of 108 megapixels. In tablets, the main camera rarely exceeds 13 megapixels in resolution. It is inconvenient to take pictures from a tablet, and excellent lighting is necessary for high-quality pictures. Sometimes the difference between 13 megapixels and 8 megapixels is practically not noticeable, so do not chase the maximum performance.
Lack of autonomy
In the course of active Internet surfing, tablets will work no longer than 18 hours. For example, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 + with a 10090 mAh battery is capable of playing videos for 14 hours and browsing the web for up to 8 hours.
When buying, you can roughly focus on the ratio: 1 hour of active work = 1250 mAh. This is an approximate figure, and much depends on the specific load on the tablet. Remember that no tablet will work in active mode for more than a day on a single battery charge.
Overpayment for a secure tablet
Rugged tablets are devices with at least IP68 protection, which means complete dustproofing and protection from immersion in water. For ordinary users, this level of protection is excessive, not to mention the additional weight and large dimensions.
Protected tablets will be needed for work in dusty places, outdoors and in the cold. These models are most often used by workers in heavy industry, power grids, and mining enterprises.
