It is not always convenient to hold a tablet in your hands while watching a movie. Hands are tense anyway. Some applications also require a free hand to work. This also applies to reading. The bottom line is that tablet manufacturers offer cases that, when bent and locked, turn into stands. However, they are not regulated. Therefore, you can create a stand yourself by printing it on a 3D printer.
Comparison of the rigid stand for the tablet and the transformer case
By and large, a tablet will fit into a school stand for textbooks. Still, questions of practicality and convenience remain. The purse, which replaces the vertical stop, has its advantages. Firstly, it is a carrier for the gadget. Easy to carry in hand or on a shoulder strap. Secondly, it protects the tablet.
But these pluses have nothing to do with the topic. But using the cover as a stand is not so easy.
The accessory is made of soft fabric. Therefore, the rigidity of the structure is achieved due to the triangular shape. Over time, the ribs will bend, the rigidity will decrease.
The stability of the tablet in the stand from the case leaves much to be desired. When used on a train, the gadget will inevitably slide down or fall.
The tilt angle adjustment does not pay off. What does it mean? There are two tablet positions. Almost vertical and flatter. In the first case, the tablet is pressed close to the back of the stand. In the second position, the tablet is not pressed. It can pop out from the bottom edge.
A plastic accessory consisting of, for example, three parts has more advantages.
It has rigid, straight geometric lines.
A straight and stable base.
The comparison is subjective. Someone will say that a cover is enough. But you can look for options or experiment with 3D printing.
Search for a 3D model on the Internet
If you have a printer and the basics of 3D modeling, then additional information is not needed. If you want a 3D model on a printer, but no knowledge, then it is important to know the nuances. Almost all owners of 3D printers are faced with a choice – to design a model on their own or download from the Internet. This applies to simple and common models. A tablet stand is one of those.
The search algorithm is simple. Open the browser, drive in the “tablet stand 3D model”. Better to go to the image search, and from there to the site. There are many options. You can get confused.
However, it is easier to find the accessory you like from the picture. There are two more points when looking for a 3D model on the Internet:
Difficulty printing should be kept to a minimum.
The file must be downloadable.
The author has placed documentation, photographs and files in the archive. Three files with the STL extension: base, frame and hook – these are the details of the future stand. It is advisable to re-save them through the Cura slicing program.
Slicing – distribution of the number of layers to a certain height.
Cura creates a print profile that includes the following parameters:
Temperature of the table and extruder.
Motor speed. From here the print time is calculated.
Hanging element support options.
Form empty space filling and wall thickness.
There are many parameters, but the listed ones are the main ones. Cura, aka host program, makes it easy to set up a print profile for a user. Meanwhile, a professional who prints to order understands the intricacies. Often, files downloaded from the Internet, in addition to setting the print profile, need to be revised using a simulation program. This concerns resizing and refining polygons (faces).
However, there is one more thing you need to know when looking for models. Many models uploaded by authors to the network are graphic plan models, but not for printing. They do not have an application function, so they cannot be printed.
This model consists of three parts:
Base. It requires 5.6 m of a bar. And it will be printed for 6 hours.
Frame. Three meters of a bar will be consumed in 3.5 hours.
Hook. Printing will take 6 hours, and the bar will take 5 meters.
In total, the entire printing will take 16 hours, including setting up the printer and warming up. Each part has cylindrical projections. Especially for these, you need to enable the option of support from the surface in Cura.
Preparing a 3D printer for printing
Printer setup depends on the type of plastic used for printing. For ABS, an extra layer of adhesion is applied to the glass. The simplest is a supersaturated sugar solution.
In workshops, special tape is used. It is important to follow the sequence of settings:
Table alignment. It is performed with a heated surface. However, it is not necessary to heat the table to a temperature of 100 degrees. Although this temperature is recommended for printing with ABS plastic. 70 degrees is quite enough. The table is adjusted with screws located at the corners. A piece of A4 sheet should slide between the glass and the extruder with little effort. This checks the four corner points and the center.
The age-old issue of 3D printing is bar breakage. There are many fixtures and fittings for smoother movement of the filament (plastic bar). The most practical option is to rewind a previously known section and screw it onto the top edge of the plastic.
Next, a plastic bar is inserted. To do this, you need to heat the extruder to the melting point of ABS. It is important to observe safety precautions, since the extruder heats up to 250 degrees. A boot can be installed on the bar.
And last but not least, liquid adhesion is applied to the hot table. If it is scotch tape, then, of course, it is glued to a cold surface.
Control the printing process or not? Of course, you cannot leave him completely unattended. But keeping track of the printer for 6 hours is difficult. That is why fine tuning is desirable to prevent thread breakage and model tearing off the table. Only a power outage will fatally affect the result.
Tablet stand in action
The accessory is assembled in two steps.
A hook is attached to the protrusions of the base with holes. The frame is fastened to the hook protrusions with holes. The stand is ready. She has seven positions. That is, seven tilt options.
The tablet is installed both vertically and horizontally.
You can read a book or watch a movie. In the folded version, only the ears protrude into which the tablet is placed.
